Abstract

1,126,012. Coated polyamide film. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 April, 1967, No. 16575/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division H1] A polyimide film is coated at up to 60‹C with an aqueous dispersion of colloidal particles having a 5 to 65 % polymer solids content composed of 5 to 100% copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and tetra fluoroethylene having a specific melt viscosity of 1,500 to 300,000 poises and a hexafluoropropylene content of 6.5 to 27%, 95 to 0% polytetrafluoroethylene, and 1 to 10% water soluble wetting agent, all parts being by weight; and heating the coated film at a film temperature of 340 to 435‹C for 0.25 to 15 minutes, the fluoropolymer layer having a final thickness of 0.02 to 1 mil. The polyimide may be of pyromellitic dianhydride and 4, 4'-diamino diphenyl ether and the film thereof has a thickness of 0.25 to 10 mils. The fluoropolymer layer may have a final thickness of 0.04 to 0.3 mil. The coated film may be heated at 370 to 400‹C and the coated film is preferably heated for 0.5 for 3 minutes. The dispersion may be applied to both sides of the polyimide film by passing the film through a bath of the aqueous dispersion, or to one side of the polyimide film by means of a rotating roller. Thick coatings are built up by successive applications of the dispersion. The coated film may be slit, wrapped around an electrical conductor e.g. stranded copper wire or silver coated copper wire, and heat sealed to form an electrical insulation.
