Abstract
1,125,995. Metal oxides. DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT. 14 Feb., 1967 [19 Feb., 1966], No. 6989/67. Heading C1A. Oxides or mixed oxides of metals of Groups II B , III B , IVB and V B of the Periodic system of Elements, whose melting points are between 200‹ and 650‹ C., preferably between 250‹ and 350‹ C., and whose oxides are stable in this temperature range, are produced by distributing the metal in or on its previously introduced oxide, and oxidizing with vigorous agitation in a vessel having no waste gas outlet in the presence of pure oxygen at temperatures greater than the melting point of the metal. The oxygen may contain a catalytic amount, i.e. sufficient to saturate it, of water vapour. The apparatus may be provided with a heating system to preheat the oxide to the required temperature, prior to the introduction of metal as grains or as a liquid melt. Metal left in the product on completion of the reaction may, according to an example, be removed completely or partially by oxidation at the reaction temperature or above.
