Abstract

To present a smooth, continuous hub surface on to which magnetic or other tape may wind at high speed, a clamp member 44 (44A) may be turned into a position to grip the end of the tape by lifting the button 52, Fig. 3, or turning the roller 78, Fig. 9. To prevent hydrodynamic interference with the tape-winding, the cheeks 21, 22 are imperforate. Threading is achieved as in Fig. 9, by lightly holding the tape at 46A and pulling the tape 88 to the right after which the clamp 46A is tightened near the end of the tape. A few turns are wound on by hand and the means 52 or 78 operated to retract the clamp 46 (46A) into the cheek-wall thickness. The turns are consolidated by pulling back on the tape 88, after which high-speed winding may proceed.
