Abstract

1,125,901. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 12 May, 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22093/65. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel assembly comprises an array of spaced, parallel nuclear fuel pins supported by means of spacer grids at intervals along their length. Each spacer grid is composed of serpentine locating strips 14 interconnected by means of egg box type slots. The strips form the sides of generally rhombic pockets and midway along each side of each pocket there is a sinuosity 35 in the strip. This sinuosity comprises a straight length 36 lying along the line joining the centres of two adjoining pockets and curved pieces 37 blending the straight length 36 into the remainder of the strip. A support grid at the bottom of the assembly comprises a number of parallel strips which fit into open ended slots in the bases of the fuel pins and a number of rods which penetrate diametric holes in the pins. The ends 21 of the strips and rods are cranked at 22 so that they are parallel to each other and threaded into holes 23 in two casing parts 24, 25 which are slid along the ends 21 and then welded along their adjacent edges 33 to form an integral casing. The ends of the strips and rods are secured by brazing or welding to the casing.
