Sutures are retained for individual withdrawal in a sleeve, folded at least three times, which is housed inside a moisture-proof, bacteria-proof envelope. In the embodiment, the sleeve 12, of a composite film of regenerated cellulose and polythene, is heat sealed at each end 17. The envelope, which is formed from composite sheets of polythene film-paperaluminium foil, and polythene-polythene tetraphthalate heat sealed along edges 11 may be opened by peeling apart upper flaps 16. Sterilization of the package may be effected through γ- radiation and antiseptic fluid may be present inside the envelope or sleeve. Longer sutures may be packaged by folding in half before insertion into the sleeve.
