Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Aqueous coating compositions suitable for providing temporary coatings which can be removed by treatment with an alkaline agent comprise (A) an organic film former consisting of (i) an emulsion polymer containing (a) 30-80 % of a methacrylate ester of a C 1 -C 10 alcohol (b) acrylic or methacrylic acid and (c) a vinyl substituted aromatic or alkaromatic hydrocarbon, an acrylate ester of a C 1 -C 10 alcohol or a vinyl ester of a C 1 - C 10 carboxylic acid (ii) a resin cut containing (a) an alkali soluble resin of the condensation or addition type and (b) an aqueous base; and (B) a zirconyl-fugitive ligand complex. e.g ammonium zirconyl carbonate. The alkali soluble resin may be a condensation product of a polyol with a rosin/maleic anhydride adduct or a styrene-acrylic acid copolymer. Optional components include plasticers, polyethylene wax, fatty acid soaps, glycols and glycol ethers, nonionic emulsifiers, casein, poly sodium carboxylate dispersant, titanium dioxide, diphenyl mercury dodecenyl succinate, antifoam agent and phthalocyanine blue. The compositions are particularly suitable for providing floor coatings, and may be applied to metals, glass, wood, linoleum, vinyl asbestos, asphalt, vinyl tile and leather, e.g. with a rag, mop, brush or by spraying or dipping.
