Abstract

Sulphur is made by reacting in a first stage a liquid heavy hydrocarbon fuel with O2- and SO2-containing gases at a high temperature so as to partially oxidize the hydrocarbons while partially reducing the SO2, subjecting the gases from the first stage to a catalytic treatment for further reduction of SO2 and to reduce any COS present, then subjecting the gases from this second stage to further catalytic treatment in a third stage to oxidize any H2S present and separate sulphur. The gases are cooled between successive stages. The heat extracted from the gases between successive stages can be used to preheat the gases before the first stage. The first stage temp. may be 1000-1200 DEG C., the second stage may be 400-450 and the third stage temp. may be 250-280 DEG C. The temp. of the first stage can be regulated by regulating the preheating of the SO2-containing gas and/or the quantity of free O2 which that gas contains. The amount of free and combined O2 contained in the gas may correspond to the amount required for complete oxidation of the hydrocarbon fuel.
