Abstract
Olefins are oligomerized in the presence of Co on C catalysts prepared by (a) depositing a nitrate A and a Co compound B on activated carbon, (b) heating the carbon on which the nitrate A and Co compound B have been deposited until all the nitrate has reacted, and (c) heating the carbon at 200-600 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere. Typical oligomerization conditions are: temperature 0-100 DEG C., pressure 300-1000 p.s.i.g. Flow rate 8-16 gms. of olefine/gm. catalyst/hour. If desired, the olefines may be oligomerized in a solvent, e.g. pentane, hexane or cyclohexane. Olefines which may be oligomerized are ethylene, propylene, butenes, pentenes and mixtures thereof. In examples, propylene is oligomerized either to hexenes, or hexenes and nonenes. A breakdown of the hexene fraction revealed that 4-methyl- and 2-methyl-pentene-1, transand cis-4-methylpentene-2, hexenes-1, -2 and -3 and 2-methylpentene-2 were produced.ALSO:An oligamerisation catalyst is made by depositing a nitrate A and a cobalt compound B on activated carbon, heating the carbon until all the nitrate has reacted and further heating the carbon in an inert gas at 200-600 DEG C. Nitrate A is preferably Cu(NO3)2, Ni(NO3)2 or Cr(NO3)3. The preferred cobalt compounds are cobalt formate or acetate.
