Abstract

In a process for the preparation of e -hydroxycaproic acid by the oxidation of cyclohexanone in the liquid phase with a gas consisting of or containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an aldehyde to produce a reaction product containing e -caprolactone, the reaction product is hydrolysed with water to e -hydroxycaproic acid which is separated. The separation may be by extraction with an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, by a steam distillation in which the acid remains as a residue.
