Abstract

1,124,306. Cathode - ray tube circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Oct., 1965 [29 Oct., 1964; 12 Dec., 1964], No. 45480/65. Heading H4T. Pin-cushion distortion is corrected by modifying each orthogonal deflection sawtooth waveform in accordance with a parabolic function of the other. For correction in the East- West direction (assuming horizontal line scanning) a known arrangement is utilized which comprises a transductor 9 (Fig. 1) having a non-linear B/H characteristic and carrying a first (two-section) winding 11, 12 connected in shunt with the horizontal deflection coils 3 (fed from scanning generator 3) together with a second winding 16 connected to the vertical deflection circuit comprising generator 4 and deflection coils 7, 8. In operation, the inductance of the winding 11, 12 is varied as a parabolic (due to the transductor characteristic) function of the vertical frequency scanning current in winding 16 and the East-West correction then results from the effect of such variation in shunt with the horizontal deflection coils 3. This arrangement, however, is stated to be unsuitable for producing North-South correction since, owing to the essentially resistive nature of the internal impedance of the vertical deflection generator, the variable inductance (equivalent to winding 11, 12) must have a high value which, it is stated, gives rise to unwanted phase shifts. In accordance with the invention therefore, North-South correction is produced by utilizing the voltage of horizontal frequency induced in winding 16 (via winding 11, 12) such voltage, which is of incorrect phase, being substantially reversed in phase by capacitor 20 and coil 22 and then integrated by the vertical deflection coils 7, 8 so that the deflection current in the latter is suitably modified. The specification discusses the theory of operation of the arrangement and shows, inter alia, that the phase change produced by 20 and 22 cannot be exactly 180 degrees (since infinite values arise). In practice a phase change of about 170 degrees is produced. Other arrangements for producing the required phase shift include a secondary coil 28 coupled to the coil 22 and connected in parallel (Fig. 8, not shown) or in series (Fig. 9, not shown) with the vertical deflection coils and an arrangement similar to Fig. 1, but with the vertical deflection coils connected directly in series and the capacitor 20 in parallel therewith (Fig. 10, not shown).
