Abstract

A sustained release tablet comprises aggregates of particles of a pharmaceutically active compound bound with a methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer or half ester derivative thereof. The tablets are prepared by binding together the active compound and copolymer, preferably by mixing the particulate active compound with a solution of the copolymer to form a paste which is subsequently dried and then broken up to form aggregates which are tabletted, usually with the aid of a lubricant. Alternatively, the paste may be granulated and then dried to form aggregates. The copolymer, which is preferably the n-butyl half ester of a methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer, may contain a plasticizer. An auxiliary binding agent, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, may be used in the formation of the aggregates and the active compound may be in the form of particles having a maximum particle size of 0.5 mm. The tablets may be subsequently coated, e.g. with a sugar or enteric coating. Sympathomimetics, haematinics antispasmodics, antihistamines and hypnotics are specified as the active material.
