Abstract

A tubular mild steel electrode has a core containing 0.1 - 6% by weight of the electrode of a chloride or fluoride wetting and fluxing agent and contains 0.2 - 2.5% Al and 0.1 - 1% Ti, Al+Ti being at least 0.6%. The core may contain calcium carbonate not exceeding one third of the wetting and fluxing agent. The Aluminium may be a wire or powder in the core or a coating on the sheath. It may be alloyed with Mn, Ti, Zr, Cu or Si. The electrode may contain .0.2 - 2.5%.Al .0.1 - 1%.Ti .0.4 - 2.5%.Mn .0.1 - 1%.Si .0 - 1%.Cu .0 - 0.1%.Ce .0.005 - 0.5%.Zr .0 - 0.2%.Ta .0 - 0.2%.Nb .0 - 0.15%.Mg .0 - 3%.Ni .0 - 2%.magnesium fluoride .0 - 2%.sodium chloride or ..fluoride .0 - 2%.lithium chloride or ..fluoride .0 - 2%.cryolite .0 - 2%.potassium chloride or ..fluoride .0 - 2%.sodium borofluoride .0 - 2%.calcium fluoride .0 - 2%.potassium titanium ..fluoride .0 - 2%.calcium carbonate .0 - 2% max..C .balance.Fe In addition small quantities of Ca, V, alkali and/or rare earth metals may be included. Such a welding electrode may produce the following weld deposit. .0.06%.C .1%.Mn .0.35%.Al .0.3%.Ti .0.5%.Si .0.1%.Zr .0.02%.Nb .0.02%.S .0.015%.P .balance Fe. The core may contain iron powder and constitutes 10 - 50% by weight of the electrode.
