Abstract

1,123,614. Electrical control of musical instruments. T. M. PAMPLIN and R. M. BULLEY. 13 Dec., 1965 [2 Nov., 1964], No. 44566/64. Heading G5J. A musical instrument is caused to play by signals characterizing the keys played on a separate keyboard, which may be attached to an instrument or be a dummy, and the signals may be stored, for example on a magnetic tape, between their production and use. Signalreleasing means are associated with each key and may be contact switches or be modulators controlled according to the velocity of the key. The signals may identify both the keys played and their expression. Each may be, for example, a modulated pulse or series of pulses of a sinusoidal carrier with a frequency or combination of frequencies which identifies the key. They are passed through a single communication channel, of any convenient length, optionally are stored on magnetic tape, and when play is desired are selected by band-pass filters, demodulated and amplified and passed to electromagnetic actuators which operate the controls of the instrument. Conveniently the signals recorded on tape have band widths of over 100 c/s and one octave of tape recording band width accommodates signals identifying the keys of one octave of a piano. The electromagnetic actuators may be moving coil devices.
