Aralkyl hydrocarbons are oxidized to the corresponding hydroperoxides with molecular oxygen in the presence of a trace quantity not exceeding 0.4 parts per million of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table. Iron and cobalt are the preferred metals, and may be added as a compound of the metal.
