Abstract

1,122,631. Grinding and trueing hobs and worms. ZAHNSCHNEIDEMASCHINENFABRIK MODUL VEB. 14 Sept., 1965, No. 39232/65. Headings B3D and B3K. Means for generating a hob or worm comprises a tool moved parallel to the workpiece axis and means for modifying the movement to give a varying tooth thickness along the length of the work. The means may be incorporated in a lathe, a hobbing or tool-grinding machine, or a trueing machine for a grinding hob. Referring to Fig. 1, hobs can be generated wherein #t 1 = #t 2 = #t 3 to produce straight teeth or where #t 1 >#t 2 >#t 3 for crowned teeth. The drive to the hob 1, Fig. 2, also rotates gears 16, 17 to rotate a lead-screw 13 engaging a nut 14. A follower 20 on the nut engages a straight or curved cam-bar 18 so that a rotational modifying movement is applied to the traverse of the grinding wheel 11. At the halfway point, the bar 18 pivots about a pin 19 and engages a stop (22) to reverse the effect of the modification. When grinding the opposite tooth flanks, the follower 20 engages the opposite face of the cam-bar. When machining a worm, the cam-bar 18 is straight and is locked against pivoting.
