[Also in Division G3] A turbo-generator connected in parallel with other machines to an electrical network runs at synchronous speed and the turbine output is maintained at a level demanded by a load demand signal by regulating the flow of steam to the turbine. As shown, a turbine 1 has a nozzle box 3 the flow to which is controlled by valve 6 operated by a servomotor 15. The latter is controlled by a pilot valve 14 which is operated via a floating lever by piston 10. The latter receives oil from a pump 8 via governor valve 9. A beam 24 is responsive at opposite ends thereof to a load demand signal from a servomotor 23 and to a pressure representative of the turbine output. In this case, the latter pressure is that obtaining in the nozzle box; alternatively it could be that in the region of the first stage stator blades. Any unbalance in beam 24 adjusts a spill valve 13 to actuate piston 10 to adjust valve 6 to restore the balance. A dashpot 27 reduces instability in the control loop. A speeder gear 17 has a servomotor 18 which, during the normal running phase of the turbo-generator, is biased so that it only operates to prevent overspeed of the turbine as sensed by the flyball governor 26. This governor system controls the speed of the turbine when the latter is not constrained to run at synchronous speeds. The control system may alternatively be pneumatic or electrical.
