Abstract
Novel polyether waxes of the general formula ROCH2CH(OH)CH2OR1OCH2CH(OH)CH2OR where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 16-30 C atoms and R1 is a benzene nucleus which may carry one or more further OH groups and/or which may be linked to further benzene nuclei, are prepared by reacting a glycidyl ether of an aliphatic monohydric alcohol with a mononuclear polyphenol having up to 6 phenolic hydroxyl groups and/or a polynuclear polyphenol having from 2 to 6 benzene nuclei and 1 to 4 phenolic hydroxyl groups per benzene nucleus in the presence of a basic catalyst at 100-250 DEG C. The preferred glycidyl ethers are those of the alcohols cetyl, stearyl, behenyl and technically obtained fat alcohols, e.g. tallow fat alcohol and synthetic alcohols, e.g. reaction products of triethyl aluminium and ethylene. The preferred phenols are pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, phloroglucinol, dihydroxydiphenyls, dihydroxynaphthalenes, dihydroxy - diphenyl - methanes, dihydroxy-diphenyl - sulphides, dihydroxy - diphenyl-sulphones, 2,2 - bis - hydroxyphenyl - propanes, novolacs, dihydroxy - dibenzyls, dihydroxy-benzophenones and amino-bis-phenols.
