Abstract
1,121,894. Man-powered wheeled vehicles. R. J. SEARLE. 8 June, 1967 [5 July, 1966; 4 Aug., 1966], Nos. 30050/66 and 35062/66. Heading B7E. A man-powered tricycle comprises a lever 33 pivoted at 36 and connected by a string 30 with a spool 27 rotatable about the front axle 21 and connected with wheel hub 23 via a free wheel device 26, the spool being biased by a coil spring 28 such that the string is wound therearound whereby downward pivoting of the end 34 of the lever 33 will unwind the string thereby rotating the wheel. Upward pivoting of end 34 will allow the spool to be rotated by spring 28 and the string rewound. The end of the string 30 may be connected with the lever at any of positions 44 for obtaining a selected mechanical advantage. A pivoted foot rest 12 has brake pads 15 fitted to it for contact with the rear wheels. The frame is made from rectangular section tube and the cycle is collapsible by pivoting of the frame at 46, 48 and the rear axle. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the back wheel 24 is driven by pulling on a string 30 passing round a front pulley 55. The wheels are attached to a moulded sheet frame 52 which is pivotable about a vertical axis by the rider's feet for steering. In a modification of Fig. 6, the string 30 may be operated by a cranked treadle pivoted to the frame. The spring 28 may be replaced by a spring connected between the string and the spool which will coil itself round the spool to rewind the string.
