Abstract

1,121,073. Artillery primers. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ARMY SECRETARY OF. 30 July, 1965 [31 July, 1964], No. 32636/65. Heading F3A. An electrically fired combustible primer for use with consumable case ammunition, comprises a head 11 of moulded combustible material in which seats a metal cup 12 bridged by an igniter wire 30, the head fitting into a tubular paper container 15. A fuze 20 extends through the inner end of the casing into a charge of black powder 16, and is supported within a combustible holder 21. Immediately behind the holder 21 is a combustible explosive support 22 having a bore connecting with an air space 19 and the fuze 20, and housing pellets of lead azide 25 and PETN 26. A heatsensitive ignition mix 28 is disposed rearward of the holder 22, and the stainless steel bridge wire 30 extends diametrically across its roar surface. A combustible support element 32 surrounds a metallic contact sleeve 34 which is spot welded to the bridge wire 30. The primer is initiated by a gun probe 43 which is inserted into the closed rear end of the cap 12, at the same time rupturing it to form contact portions 41. The probe 43 forms an electric circuit with the sleeve 34, wire 30, cap 12, and gun probe portion 42.
