Abstract
112,100. Alcock, W. H. Dec. 15, 1916. Roasting granular substances.-An apparatus for treating by heat cocoa, coffee, berries, peanuts, cotton seed, flax seed, or similar material or for the manufacture of biscuits or rusks of the type in which the material to be treated is carried through a longitudinal chamber on an endless conveyer, constructed of a series of slats mounted on rollers runnings on rails extending along the sides of the chamber has the consecutive slats of the conveyer connected by links which are situated on the outer side of the rollers. The conveyer B which passes through the chamber A is formed of a number of slats b upon the end of each of which is a pair of inverted L-shaped members bleach of which supports a roller b<2> adapted to run on the rails D. Consecutive slats are connected together at each end by a link b<3> pivoted on the outer side of the rollers b<2>. The links b<3> and members b<1> may extend below the rollers and face each side of the rails D to maintain the rollers on the rails. The lower reach of the conveyer is supported at intervals by sprocket wheels H. The material on the slats is heated by a series of jets I supplied with fuel from two feed-pipes i, the products of combustion passing away by flue pipes J, the outlets of which are controlled by dampers j. The supply of air to the chamber A is regulated by vertically sliding doors K situated at the ends. The space below the heating chamber is enclosed to prevent cooling of the conveyer during its reverse passage, the temperature of this space being controlled by a damper a<3>.
