Abstract

Polymer films, pellets, strands, twisted strands, yarns or fabrics are dyed by applying to the surface of said polymer a solution of a surface modifier i.e. mono-di or tri chloroacetic acid, phenol, cresol or benzyl alcohol, heating the polymer to remove the solvent for the surface modifier, e.g. toluene, at a temperature less than that which would drive the modifier from the surface thereof; dyeing said polymer with a dye solution at ambient temperature; and heating said polymer at a higher temperature than said previous heating temperature to produce permanently-dyed polymer. Polymers referred to are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide and acrylic polymers. Successive colouring steps may be carried out.
