Abstract

[Also in Division G3] The viscosity of a fluid is measured by the strain developed in a paddle rotated at a constant speed in the fluid. As shown (Fig. 1), the test fluid flows through a chamber 11 containing a paddle 12 rotated by a constant speed motor 29, the axis of the shaft 24 and the paddle 12 being in line with the direction of fluid-flow. Resistance strain gauges 38, 39 mounted on opposite faces of the paddle, are connected in a bridge circuit whose output indicates the viscosity or consistency of the fluid. Alternative constructions of the paddle are shown. The transducer may be used in a retroactive control system for a continuous grease unit Fig. 5 (not shown) wherein part, alkali and a No. 1 oil are pumped into a vacuum flash chamber, and a portion of the mixture is fed via a heat exchanger 93 to a consistometer 94 whose output signal is converted at 72 to operate a pneumatic valve 73 controlling the addition of a No.2 oil which is added to the mixture to maintain the measured property at a constant value.
