Abstract
HCN is prepared by pre-heating a mixture of O2, N2, NH3 and CH4 and passing it over a catalyst comprising Pt, Rh, Ir or a mutual alloy thereof at 1000-1400 DEG C., wherein the molar ratio of (a) O2:O2 + N2 is above 0.21 and not more than 0.35; (b) O2 + N2:NH3 is from 6 to 2; (c) O2 + N2:CH4 is from 6 to 1.6 and (d) CH4:NH3 is from 1.3 to 1.0. The molar ratio (a) is obtained by using air enriched with oxygen. The catalyst is preferably in net form.
