Abstract
1,120,368. Determining opacity. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'AUTOMATISME. Jan. 31, 1967 [Jan. 31, 1966], No.4740/67. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G3] In an arrangement for the continuous determination of the opacity of a fluid flowing in a conduit, by the transmission of radiant energy therethrough, the dimension of the conduit in the direction of the radiant beam is varied along the test section of the conduit, and the source and detector are made to be movable along the conduit under the control of a servo arrangement which maintains constant the radiant energy falling on the detector, the position of the source and detector carriage indicating on a scale the opacity. The movement of the carriage may be used to control the rate of flow from a source of a constituent being measured in order to maintain its concentration sensibly constant. The progressive change of dimension may be designed to give a desired linearity, or may be stepped, and the radiation transmission properties of the conduit reducing material may be made to compensate for a proportion of the opacity of the fluid in order to determine the proportion of a particular constituent. The conduit reducing material may be hollow and filled with a liquid having a reference opacity. The determination of the uranium content of uranyl nitrate by gamma rays is exemptified.
