Abstract

1,120,306. Tool setting devices. JAMES ARCHDALE & CO. Ltd. 17 March, 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 12272/66. Heading B3C and B3T. In combination with adjustable adaptors, a device for use in the setting of cutting tools such as drills comprises a base 10, a plurality of dummy tool carrying parts 12 on the base, an arm 14 mounted on a column 11 for swinging movement relative to the base about an axis perpendicular thereto and having gauging means 16, 16a thereon, the dummy tool carrying parts 12 being arranged on an arc around the axis of the arm and a plurality of thimbles 17 locatable on the tools. In use, the tools are located with the adjustable adaptors in the tool carrying parts 12 and respective thimbles are positioned over the upper ends of the tools, the adaptors are then adjusted so that with the correct tool setting and the movement of the arm past each respective tool, the gauging surfaces 17a on the thimbles co-operate with the surface 16a of the gauging means at the end of the arm. The gauging surface 16a on the arm is parallel to the base and the gauging surface 17a on the thimbles are stepped to permit " go " and " not go " gauging techniques. As an alternative to the gauging surface on the arm a dial gauge may be used. Alternative forms of thimble are described suitable for use with a spot facing tool, Fig. 3 (not shown), and for combined reaming and drilling and counter sinking tools, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
