Abstract
The invention comprises poly-(hexamethylene terephthalate) having a melt index of 2-15. The polymer may optionally contain (a) up to 2% by weight (of the total weight of the glycol residues) of an additional glycol (e.g. ethylene-, trimethylene-, tetramethylene-or octamethylene glycol), (b) up to 2% by weight (of the total weight of the acid radicals of an additional dicarboxylic acid (e.g. adipic, sebacic, azelaic or isophthalic acid) or (c) up to 2% by weight (of the total weight of the acid residues) of a tricarboxylic acid (e.g. trimellitic anhydride). Preferably the polyester is made by reacting terephthalic acid and hexamethylene glycol until essentially all of the water of reaction has been removed, then adding an organic liquid, preferably a hydrocarbon, of h.p. 175 DEG to 265 DEG C. (which may be solvent or non-solvent for the polyester) and continuing the heating. When the desired melt index is reached, the polyester may be recovered by first distilling off most of the organic liquid, then adding an aromatic hydrocarbon and allowing the polyester to crystallize out. If a tricarboxylic acid is used, this is preferably added towards the end of the reaction.ALSO:Paper, cloth, aluminium and steel foil, or nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or regenerated cellulose film may be extrusion coated with poly (hexamethylene terephthalate) having a melt index of 2 to 15. In an example poly (hexamethylene terephthalate) was extrusion coated on kraft bag paper to form a film of thickness 0.5 to 2 mils.
