Abstract
1,119,703. Gain control. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 22 July, 1965 [30 Sept., 1964], No. 39707/64. Heading H3Q. [Also in Division H1] A variable gain control circuit comprises a 3db directional coupler (e.g. that described in Specification 989,271) having input and output connected to diagonally opposite ports 2, 3<SP>1</SP> and electrically variable loads 4 (e.g. varactor diodes) connected to the other ports 2<SP>1</SP>, 3. The degree of mismatch of the loads determines the amount of power transmitted to the output port 3<SP>1</SP>. The output may be fed to an amplifier 9 and the gain may be controlled retroactively by means of a feedback circuit comprising a rectifier 10 and a D.C. amplifier 11. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the input consists of an I.F. signal and the output is fed to a R.F. converter. Each variable load 4 may comprise a single varactor, two varactors arranged back-to-back or two pairs of varactors with one pair back-to-back with the other. The varactors may be in series or shunt connection with resistive elements.
