Abstract

Hydroquinone is produced by reacting acetylene with carbon monoxide in a mixture of water and an organic solvent in which the molar ratio of water to acetylene is from 0.5 : 1 to 5 : 1 and in the presence of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl, the temperature at the start of the reaction being from 200 to 280 DEG C. and the pressure from 50 to 450 atm. and the organic solvent being distilled off on completion of the reaction and the hydroquinone recovered from the distillation residue. Suitable solvents are, for example, aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene; ketones such as acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone; ethers such as dioxan, tetrahydrofuran and di-isopropyl ether; hydroxy ethers such as 2-methoxy ethanol and 2-ethoxy ethanol; and esters such as ethyl acetate.
