Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the bleaching of cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton, linen, jute, viscose rayon and paper, comprises an aqueous solution containing a peroxy compound, the solution being stabilized by the addition thereto of an amino tri(lower alkylidene phosphonic acid), the lower alkylidene group containing 1-9 carbon atoms or a water soluble salt thereof. The amino tri(lower alkylidene phosphonic acid) may have the formula <FORM:1119221/C1/1> in which X and Y are hydrogen or alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms e.g. amino tri(methyl phosphonic acid), amino tri(ethylidenephosphonic acid), amino tri(isopropylidenephosphonic acid), amino mono(methylphosphonic acid) di(ethylidene phosphonic acid) and amino tri(butylidene phosphonic acid). The salts used are preferably the penta sodium salts although the potassium, lithium, ammonium and amino salts are also suitable. Suitable peroxy compounds are sodium peroxide, the super oxide of potassium (K20), hydrogen peroxide and addition compounds thereof, perborates, persulphates, persulphuric acid, peroxy monophosphoric acid and water soluble salts thereof, e.g. the sodium, potassium, ammonium and organic amine salts. The solution may be adjusted to a pH of 7.5-12.5 by the addition of sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate, silicate or phosphate and may also contain optical whiteners and wetting agents. The solution may contain 0.01-5% by weight of peroxy compound and 0.001-5% by weight of stabilizing agent. The stabilizing agent may be mixed with the dry bleaching composition prior to preparing the bleaching solution or added to the bleaching concentrate prior to dilution.ALSO:Amino tri(methylphosphonic acid) is prepared by heating together diethyl phosphite, ammonia and formaldehyde and hydrolysing the hexaethyl amino tri(methylphosphonate) produced by refluxing it with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Pentasodium amino tri-(methylphosphonate) of the formula N-(CH2PO3Na2)2(CH2PO3HNa) is prepared by dissolving the amino tri(methylphophonic acid) in NaOH solution and evaporating the resulting solution to dryness.ALSO:Cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton, linen, jute, viscose rayon and paper, are bleached by treating them with an aqueous solution containing a peroxy compound, the solution being stabilized by the addition thereto of an amino tri (lower alkylidene phosphonic acid), the lower alkylidene group containing 1-9 carbon atoms, or a water soluble salt thereof. The amino tri (lower alkylidene phosphonic acid) may have the formula <FORM:1119221/D1-D2/1> in which X and Y are hydrogen or alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms e.g. amino tri (methyl phosphonic acid), amino tri (ethylidenephosphonic acid), amino tri (isopropylidenephosphonic acid), amino mono (methylphosphonic acid) di (ethylidene phosphonic acid) and amino tri (butylidene phosphonic acid). The salts used are preferable the penta sodium salts although the potassium, lithium, ammonium and amino salts are also suitable. Suitable peroxy compounds are sodium peroxide, the super oxide of potassium (K2O), hydrogen peroxide and addition compounds thereof, urea per compounds, perborates, persulphates, persulphuric acid, peracetic acid, peroxy monophosphoric acid and water soluble salts thereof, e.g. the sodium, potassium, ammonium and organic amine salts. The solution may be adjusted to a pH of p 7.5-12.5 by the addition of sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate, silicate or phosphate and may also contain optical whiteners and wetting agents. The solution may contain 0.01-5% by weight of peroxy compound and 0.001-5% by weight of stabilizing agent. The stabilizing agent may be mixed with the dry bleaching composition prior to preparing the bleaching solution or added to the bleaching concentrate prior to dilution.
