Abstract

A hypertonic saline solution for diluting blood prior to coagulation tests comprises Na+, K+ and Mg+ + in amounts 5-15 times their normal average concentration in blood, and anions which are not capable of precipitating Ca+ +, the solution having a pH of 6.8-8. In the preferred solution, NaCl, KCl, HCl, veronal sodium, sodium acetate and MgSO4 are present. Such solutions may be made up with twice distilled water and measured quantities sealed in neutral glass ampoules. A method of determining coagulation time with thromboplastin is described.
