Abstract

1,118,772. Liquid heaters. ELECTRICITE ET ELECTROMECANIQUE S.A., and R. S. J. FONTAINE. 26 Jan., 1966 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 3560/66. Heading F4A. Oil to be heated flows from pipe 14, upwardly through a spiral path defined by barrier strip 7 welded between coaxial shells 5 and 6, through connecting pipe 21 into spiral tube coil 4 and then through connecting pipe 22 into a second spiral path defined by barrier strip 17 welded between coaxial inner shells 15 and 16, to outlet 20. The pipes of the coil 4 constituting the lower turns have a smaller diameter than the middle and upper turns, whilst the pitch of the helical path between the inner coaxial shells 15, 16 is less at the middle than at the extremities of the shells. The closer pitch corresponds to the zone of maximum heat radiation from a burner (not shown) which fires downwardly into the inner space within shell 16, the gases from which flow in counter flow up around the coil 4 and down around the outside of the outermost shell 5. In this way the rate of heat absorption of the oil per unit length of helical path between the shells 15, 16 is maintained constant. The double-walled shells are formed either by continuously welding the barrier strip 17 to the outer surface of the inner wall 16 and winding a metal ribbon in overlapping turns around the outer edge faces of the barrier strip and welding it thereto, which overlapping metal ribbon then constitutes the outer wall 15, or by spot welding the strip 17 to the inner wall 16 and then resistance welding a preformed outer wall to the strip and the inner wall, using a welding machine.
