Abstract
Carbon is deposited on porous granules of e.g. alumina, silica gels, sintered Fuller's earth, bauxite or magnesia by heating in a hydrocarbon vapour e.g. hexane, kerosene or benzene. The granules are simultaneously agitated by tumbling or by a fluidized bed process. The hydrocarbon may be fed into a stream of nitrogen with a small amount of oxygen. The coated granules are used for decolorizing sugar by passing an unpurified sugar solution downwardly through a column of the granules maintained at a temperature between 50 and 80 DEG C.
