Abstract

1,118,416. Surgical drape sheets. PARKE, DAVIS & CO. 21 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8284/67. Heading A5R A wound edge protector comprises an anchor member 1, preferably a resilient tubular ring, having a flexible plastic sheet 2 acting as a drape attached to its edges. The anchor member may be made of polyvinyl chloride tubing and the plastic sheet may be made from polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, or a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride copolymer. In use, for instance in abdominal surgery, the anchor member is compressed to an elliptical shape, inserted through the incision into the body cavity, and released so that it underlies the cut edge of the peritoneum and thus anchors the drape, which covers and protects the edges of the incision. The anchor member may be made from a rod or rods other than tubular in shape, and its shape need not be annular. When the anchor member is made from tubing, the ends of the tubing may either be releasably or permanently held together, or they may not be united so that the tubing is C-shaped or spiral in form. The flexible plastic sheet forming the drape may be continuous or severed radially from the anchor member to its outer edge, and it may be attached to the anchor member by heat welding. cement, or by means of a hem.
