In a hay-conditioner of the kind having two superposed horizontal stalk-crushing rollers 23, 24 disposed transversely to the direction of travel each roller comprises a central section 38, 47 of resilient material having a relatively smooth surface and end-sections 44, 48 of non-deformable material having raised portions 46, 49 which extend a lesser distance from the axis of rotation than the surfaces of the central sections of the rollers. The purpose of this construction is to accommodate the greater thickness at the edges of the swath, produced by the swath-boards of of the mower which lays the hay. The upper roller 23 is hollow and the section 38 comprises a rubber sleeve having shallow helical grooves 41, 42. The outer sections 44 comprise sleeves of cast-iron steel, plastics, or non-ferrous metal keyed to the hollow tube (not visible), forming the core of the roller, and carrying the end-journals 21. Internal snap-rings secure the outer sections in position on the coretube. The lower roller 24 is of smaller diameter and has a solid core of squaresection on which the roller-sections are slid, the outer sections being retained by pins through the core. On both rollers the raised portions 46, 49 may comprise splines (as shown) or ribs arranged in helical or herring bone pattern (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) or rows of frusto-pyramidal studs (Fig. 12, not shown).
