Abstract

2- and 4-Isopropenylpyridines are prepared by the thermal decomposition of the corresponding 2-pyridylpropanol or 2-methyl-2-pyridyl-propane-1,3-diol. The starting materials may carry alkyl substituents and/or may be fused to an aromatic nucleus, as in a quinolyl radical. The thermal decomposition may be effected by contacting an aqueous solution of the starting material with a hot liquid, e.g. glycerol, containing a basic dehydration catalyst, e.g. potassium hydroxide. Examples are given. 2- and 4-Pyridylpropanols and 2-methyl-2-pyridylpropane-1,3-diols, used as starting materials, are obtainable by the interaction of formaldehyde and the appropriate ethylpyridine. This reaction may be effected at 40-140 DEG C., suitably under pressure, an excess of formaldehyde being preferably used.
