Abstract
1,117,178. Making capsules. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 26 April, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 19130/67. Heading B8C. Capsules, of up to about 1¢ cms. diameter and composed of a hydrophobic solid or liquid core surrounded by a hydrophilic polymer shell, are produced by forming a dispersion of core material (of the desired dimensions) in an aqueous solution of at least one hydrophilic polymeric material and causing a coacervate phase comprising the polymer(s) to form, in which phase the coacervate particles are " stringy " rather than globular, by adjustment of pH and temperature. The stringy coacervate is able to surround and encapsulate the relatively large cores and the capsules formed may be hardened, and dried by conventional procedures. In examples, viscous liquid cores (pigment in silicone fluid and dioctyl phthalate) are encapsulated in shells of gelatin/carrageenan and gelatin/gum arabic/ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymers.
