Abstract

Orthovinyltoluene is prepared from orthoethyltoluene, and similarly 2,3-, 2,4- or 2,5-dimethyl - 1 - vinylbenzene from 2,3-, 2,4- or 2,5-dimethyl-1-ethylbenzene, by a catalytic dehydrogenation in which ring isomerization is substantially inhibited wherein the vaporized heated feedstock mixed with a steam diluent is brought into contact with a dehydrogenation catalyst consisting of alumina, alumina promoted by platinum, chromic oxide, or iron oxide, or alumina-vanadium containing 0.5-10% by weight elemental vanadium, at 500-800 DEG C. and an hourly space velocity of 0.1-10 gms. feedstock per c.c. catalyst, the condensible effluent gases are recovered, and the dehydrogenated product is separated therefrom. The weight ratio steam diluent: feedstock may be 2:1 to 4:1. A promoted alumina catalyst may contain at least 0.1 wt. per cent Pt, 2-20 wt. per cent Cr, or 2-20 wt. per cent Fe.
