Abstract

Epoxy resins are cured with mixtures of liquid, isomeric cyclo olefinic anhydrides, prepared by catalytic isomerization of a solid cyclo olefinic anhydride (see Division C2). In examples, mixtures of D 1 - and D 4 - isomers of tetrahydro phthalic acid anhydride, and of its 3- or 4-methyl derivatives are used to cure an epoxy resin derived from bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether.ALSO:Mixtures of isomeric cyclo olefinic acid anhydrides, liquid at ambient temperatures, are made by heating a normally solid cyclo olefinic acid anhydride to above its M.P., isomerizing the molten anhydride in an anhydrous atmosphere in the presence of a solid, particulate, acid isomerization catalyst which is insoluble in the anhydride at contact conditions including a temp. in the range 100-250 DEG C., a contact time of 5-480 min. and a pressure of 1-5 At., and cooling the liquid obtained. Specified starting compounds are D 4-tetrahydro-phthalic anhydride, and its 3- and 4-methyl derivatives. The catalyst may be a silica-alumina, or an ion-exchange resin. The products are used to cure epoxy resins (see Division C3).
