Abstract

1,116,175. Cables. SIEMENS A.G. 13 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 45755/66. Addition to 1,046,314. Heading H1A. The parent Specification relates to the use of plugs of material which swell in contact with water to prevent the spread of moisture along a cable. According to the present Specification this material is produced by cross-linking with an epihalohydrin (preferably epichlorohydrin) a compound with a molecular weight in the range 500 to 10,000 e.g. a polysaccharide (such as water soluble degraded starch or a dextrin). Before insertion in the cable this material may be mixed with a viscous liquid miscible with water (e.g. glycerol) to produce a rubbery solid which swells on contact with water. A plug of this rubbery material resists changes of location once installed and cannot be displaced by bending of the cable.
