Abstract

1,116,045. Safety harness. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. 10 June, 1965 [11 June, 1964], No. 24325/64. Heading A3V. A harness lap strap anchored at one side of a vehicle seat is wound on a spring retraction reel incorporating a locking device which is inoperative whilst the strap is being unwound across the front of the seat occupant's body but becomes operative automatically on coupling of the strap to a anchorage on the other side of the seat to permit reeling-in whilst preventing unreeling of the strap. The reel 12 may itself be passed across the user's body to unwind the strap, insertion of a tongue 16 in a complementary member 17 automatically actuating the reel-locking device. The strap end 14 is anchored to the vehicle floor at 15 and is housed in a tube 13, pivotable towards and away from the seat, atop which the reel 12 rests when the strap is not in use. The member 17 mounted on a strap 19 rests on a similar tube 18. A lock-override bar 22 can be depressed to allow the strap to be unwound whilst the coupling members 16, 17 are engaged. These members are released by means of a lever 23, Fig. 3 not shown. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 not shown, the reel is fixedly mounted on the floor and its locking device is operated by means of a motion transmitting cable (25).
