Abstract

Urethane-urea copolymers are prepared by reacting at 90 DEG to 130 DEG C. (a) a polyurethane prepolymer having a M.W. of 1000-5000, containing 2 to 10% by weight of free isocyanate groups and being the reaction product of an excess of an aromatic diisocyanate and a dihydric compound, (b) an amine containing at least two primary amine groups, the amine being present in an amount of 30% less than 20% in excess of the amount stoichiometrically required to react with the free isocyanate radicals in (a), and (c) 2 to 5% by weight based on the prepolymer of a fatty acid having 12 to 26 carbon atoms and containing not more than one unsaturated carton-to-carbon bond therein; and continuing the reaction until a copolymer is obtained having a Shore A hardness of at least 50 measured at 100 DEG C. Preferred dihydric compounds used to form the prepolymer are polyethers and polyesters whilst the preferred diisocyanates are the toluylene diisocyanates. Suitable amines are phenylene diamines 4,41-diaminodiphenyl, 4,41-diaminodiphenylmethane and especially 4,41-methylene-bis-(2-chloroaniline) The fatty acid may be stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, lauric acid and erucic acid. Microfine graphite and silicone oils may be added to the copolymer forming reaction mixture. The copolymers are especially suitable in the production of selflubricating bearings (see Division F2).
