Abstract

1,115,318. Electrophonic musical instruments. D. H. BALDWIN CO. 4 April, 1966, No. 14829/66. Heading G5J. [Also in Division H1] A photo-electric musical instrument (e.g. an organ) comprises a rotating pitch disc 8 and a fixed voice disc 9 which forms one wall of a sealed chamber 35 containing several arrays of photo-electric elements 26. As described, desiccant 32 ensures that the chamber 35 (sealed by rings 23, 25) is maintained free from moisture, thus eliminating the need for encapsulated photo-cells. Arrays of open photo-cells each of which can be individually selected by co-ordinate techniques under control of keys and stops (Fig. 2, not shown) are provided thus eliminating the use of shutters. The pitch disc 8 is biased by a spring 20 into engagement with a drive 17. A magnet may be lowered to cooperate magnetically with teeth on an armature 38 to vary the rotational speed of the disc at a sub-audio rate to effect pitch vibrato. In order to reduce thump due to transients when additional voices are introduced, a balanced amplifier and centre-tapped transformer are employed and each stop operates ganged contacts or a potentiometer contact to gradually connect in the additional photo-cell array. Several voicing bands relatively displaced in phase are provided on the voicing disc for each pitch band on the pitch disc to give the effect of ensemble.
