Abstract

Compositions comprise an aqueous disperpersion having a solids content of 30 to 70 weight per cent and comprising a pigment and an adhesive in amount of 5 to 20 weight per cent based on the dry pigment, at least 10% by weight of which adhesive is a latex of an ethylene/propylene copolymer or an ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer. The adhesive may also comprise starch or casein, and the pigment may be clay, calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide. The compositions may be used for coating paper or paperboard. The latices may be prepared by dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent, dispersing the solution in water with the aid of emulsifying agents, and removing the organic solvent by steam distillation. The pigment may be dispersed in water, optionally with a soluble pyrophosphate, and compounded with the binder. Examples describe aqueous dispersions comprising a clay slip and an ethylene/propylene copolymer latex optionally, together with starch.ALSO:Paper may be coated with compositions having a solids content of 30 to 70 weight per cent and which comprises an aqueous dispersion of a pigment and an adhesive, said adhesive being present in an amount of 5 to 20 per cent based on the weight of dry pigment and said adhesive containing at least 10 per cent by weight of a latex of an ethylene/propylene copolymer or ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer. The adhesive may also comprise starch or casein, and the pigment may be clay, calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide. Examples describe the coating of paper with compositions comprising clay slip, ethylene/propylene copolymer latices stabilised with alkyl sulphate surface active agents, and optionally starch.
