Abstract

1,115,125. Thyristor firing circuits. NOVI P.B. 5 April, 1966 [6 April, 1965], No. 14995/66. Heading H3T. [Also in Division G3] The charging current of a battery B supplied from a permanent magnet alternator A and rectifier bridge D 1 , D 2 , D 3 , Th 1 , Th 2 , Th 3 is controlled by a relaxation oscillator which varies the firing angle of the controlled semi-conductor rectifiers Th 1 , Th 2 , Th 3 according to the value of the battery voltage. The oscillator consists of a uni-junction transistor Tr 1 and a timing circuit C, R 3 and controls an amplifying transistor Tr 2 which supplies firing pulses to the rectifiers Th 1 , Th 2 , Th 3 via a transformer T. The transistor Tr 1 is subjected to the fluctuating voltage difference between the alternator output (via diodes d 1 , d 2 , d 3 ) and the voltage of the battery B and is thus switched on at varying instants in each half-cycle determined by the battery voltage, the rectifiers Th 1 , Th 2 ,Th 3 being fired at corresponding instants. When transistor Tr 2 conducts the capacitor C is charged through both transistors until they switch off, after which it discharges through the resistors R 3 , R 4 to allow the transistor Tr 1 to be switched on again after a predetermined time dependent on the time constant of the discharge circuit. The transformer T may be replaced by three capacitors connected between the resistor R 5 and respective control electrodes of the rectifiers Th 1 , Th 2 , Th 3 , a decoupling resistor being connected between the control electrode and cathode of each rectifier, Fig. 2 (not shown). The uni-junction transistor Tr 1 may be replaced by a tunnel diode or a Shockley diode or the oscillator may comprise a two-transistor multivibrator or any arrangement of semi-conductors and resistance - capacitance timing circuit capable of generating short pulses.
