Abstract

Granules, e.g. of concentrated fertilizer, are prepared by feeding a continuous stream of molten material e.g. from one or more jets of up to 7 mm. diameter on to and into vigorously boiling liquid, the localized vaporization whereof breaks up the stream into rapidly cooled substantially spherical drops; the boiling point of the liquid, which does not dissolve or react with the molten material, being at least 20 DEG C. and preferably 70-100 DEG C. less than the melting point of the material and the liquid preferably being of lower density. The molten material may comprise ammonium nitrate, sulphate nitrate or phosphate or mixtures of the nitrate and monammonium phosphate and/or diammonium phosphate, or mixtures of ammonium nitrate with potassium phosphate or nitrate, sodium nitrate, urea or alkali metal hydroxides. The molten material may also contain solids in suspension, e.g. calcium sulphate, dicalcium phosphate. The boiling liquid is selected from paraffin, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene or halogenated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons or ketones, ethers and esters, of which examples are given, or tetralin, methyl " Cellosolve " (Registered Trade Mark), carbon disulphide and silicones. The boiling liquid may also be dissolved in a different liquid at a temperature below its boiling point; it is preferably maintained at boiling point by the heat supplied by the molten material and vaporized liquid is condensed and returned to the liquid.
