Abstract

Bodies are formed from powder material by enclosing the powder in an impermeable flexible casing supported in a rigid container having walls allowing the access of a pressure medium from outside the container to the external surface of the casing, which is compressed by an external pressure influencing the entire external surface of the casing, which conforms exactly with the internal shape of the container without pressurization i.e. application by means of a gas of a pressure difference across the walls of the casing. The container may be a net or grid; the powder may be subjected to an externally applied magnetic or electrical field, and the pressure medium may be a gas above ambient temperature. Different parts of the casing may be filled with powder having different properties. The casing preferably is adhered to the inside of the container by sucking it when warm, by spraying or by adhesive. Other components of the product may be introduced into the casing before compression, and the powder body may be subjected to calibration in a forming tool after compression. The casing may become diffused in the body during treatment after removal from the container or burnt away, melted or evaporated.
