A vehicle-washing gantry moving over a stationary vehicle is set in motion by a coinoperated mechanism incorporating a coin slide 19, and as the gantry moves it pushes aside a vertically pivoted gravity or spring-biased arm 17 by engaging an anti-friction element 23 with the arm, a wheel 25 on the arm then running along the side of the gantry. When the gantry returns a reverse procedure occurs. In a modification, the coin mechanism may be pivotally attached to the gantry and be raised to an out of the way position.
