Abstract

1,114,416. Radiographic examination of material via neutron irradiation. PLESSEYU.K. Ltd. 16 July, 1965 [13 July, 1964], No. 28803/64. Heading H5K. [Also in Division G1] Oxygen distribution in material is determined by activation of the oxygen content by bombardment with high energy neutrons to produce a radioactive isotope of nitrogen. The high energy gamma radiation resulting from the activation during the period when the radioactive isotope decays back to stable oxygen is detected and a viewable light pattern is produced indicative of the oxygen distribution in the material, in dependence upon and contemporaneously with such detection. A steel test-piece 1 is subjected to high energy neutrons emitted from a neutron generator within a shielded enclosure 3. The activated test-piece 1 is then positioned adjacent a metal strip 4 which receives gamma radiation and emits electrons. The emitted electrons impinge on an electron sensitive phosphor 5 to produce a light pattern corresponding to oxygen distribution in the test-piece 1. The phosphor 5 is coupled to an image intensifier 6 and the magnified image is viewed on a fluorescent screen 7. Alternatively the image may be viewed with binoculars or a binocular microscope. If the test-piece is relatively thin, an improved image representation may be obtained using two gamma radiation detectors arranged one on each side of the test-piece and by superimposing the two determinations. Alternatively, the gamma radiation may be sensed directly by a screened gamma-sensitive phosphor or by a bundle of phosphors, to produce a light pattern corresponding to the oxygen distribution. When it is also required to obtain an assessment of the total oxygen content, then an aggregate number of impulses derived from detecting equipment comprising a multiplicity of fibre phosphors and representing the total oxygen content may be recorded. Improved sensitivity may be obtained by use of a large gammasensitive scintillator (instead of strip 4 and material 5) optically coupled to a multiplier phototube.
