Abstract

1,114,333. Spectrophotometer. SHIMADZU SEISAKUSHO Ltd. Aug. 11,1966 [Aug. 14, 1965], No. 35946/66. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] The derivative spectrum of a sample (i. e. the plot of the first differential of the absorbance of the sample against wavelength) is obtained by producing a pair of mono-chromatic light beams B, B<SP>1</SP> having the same spectral band width, masking part of each beam, using aperture masks M, M<SP>1</SP> , so that the unmasked portions of the beams have particular wavelengths which differ from one another by a small amount, passing these portions through respective cells C, C<SP>1</SP>, both containing the sample under investigation, and detecting the light transmitted by the cells. The outputs from detectors 23, 23<SP>1</SP> (which may be photo-multipliers) are compared to produce a ratio, which is converted to a logarithmic value, and plotted, while the wavelength of the original spectral band width is changed. In the derivative spectrum produced, features such as overlapping absorption bands of a sample show up more clearly than in the usual absorption spectrum Figs. 1-3, (not shown). The optical system includes a source 10, a mirror system 11-13 leading the beam into the prism monochromator 14 which produces the required beam. This is split into the two equal wavelength beams B, B<SP>1</SP> by splitter 19 after collimation and chopping at 17,18 respectively. The sample beam paths contain attenuators 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and cylindrical lenses 22, 22<SP>1</SP> besides the sample cells C, C<SP>1</SP> and slits S, S<SP>1</SP> provided by aperture masks M, M<SP>1</SP>.
