Abstract

In a densitometer the weight of some of the substance is counterbalanced by the force exerted by an electromagnetic the current through which is determined by the contents of a counter to which clock-pulses are admitted either additively or subtractively in accordance with any photo-electrically directed out-of balance. The electromagnetic counterbalancing force produced by the counter is augmented by a second electromagnetic force proportional to the extent of out-of-balance. This second force diminishes to zero as balance is approached but it does provide an immediate counterbalancing force which is effective to limit the out-of-balance following a sudden change in density of the substance being measured before the counter has had time to restore the balance.
